Galway History Website was created by Robert Borkowski, local culture and history enthusiast. One of many, for whom Galway has become a sort of new homeland, Robert, as much as his language abilities allowed him to, has started getting to know the culture and history of one of the most interesting places in Ireland.

Understanding similar problems of his many countrymen, Robert decided to set up a website aiming at gathering information about Galway and its surroundings. Along with volunteers, the gathered material was then to be translated into Polish. After a while, Robert realized there was no website devoted solely to history and all the important facts pertaining to the city’s life in the past.

That’s how the idea was born for creating a multimedia lexicon on Galway history targeted at all the town’s enthusiasts; the native ones as well as those affected by the international diaspora. Is this material going to be translated into other languages than Polish? Who knows, perhaps Galway lovers of other nationalities will also join us?

Galway History is a project which is ambitious to become an open knowledge mine. There will be facts related to history of Galway city and county and all this will be created by and for Galwegians. Photographs, texts, recordings and films from the past will be presented here as the project grows and more and more amateur and professional historians join in, willing to share their own treasures.

Robert is a developer and he promises he will devote his time also to developing this website. If it turns out to be too much for him in terms of his time and technical possibilities, he will gladly let another organization aiming at promoting Galway’s culture and history do the job.

Private individuals, companies and institutions; eveyone is welcome to join in and lend their practical and financial support. Owners of pubs, restaurants and other all other buildings who may have in their collections parts of rich Galway history, often displaying it on their walls; show it to others!

All materials collected here will allow the local young people learn about history of Galway families and places in a modern way. History is always fascinating, but it’s most appealing through photographs, films and stories. Let’s get together and create Free Open Internet Galway History Forum.

If you’re in possession of interesting pictures, or perhaps you have your own stories to tell and you’d like to share these, do visit our website. All photographs will be scanned and the originals returned to their owners. Authors will retain copyrights to all their texts and old recordings and films will be converted to a proper format allowing you to place them on the website. The sources and owners of the preented materials will always be acknowledged.

Consider yourselves invited!
